ENROFLOXACIN 150 TABLETS
Composition
Each tablets contains: Enrofloxacin 150mg
Description
Enrofloxacin 50 and 150 , are broad spectrum bacteriocidal antibiotic tablets for dogs and cats with activity against many Gram positive and Gram negative organisms.
Action
Enrofloxacin is a synthetic drug from the class of fluoroquinolones. It has a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus intermedius, Streptococcus spp, Actinomyces pyogenes, Escherichia coli, spp, Klebsiella spp, Proteus spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Brucella canis, Salmonella spp, Bordetella bronchiseptica and Mycoplasma spp. Enrofloxacin exerts its effect on bacterial DNA-gyrase. This is a type II topoisomerase enzyme that plays a crucial role in the unwinding, cutting and resealing of DNA. Inhibition of this enzyme leads to replication failure. Enrofloxacin is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and has a high volume of distribution, reaching high concentrations in the liver, bile, kidney, lungs, reproduction system including prostatic tissue and fluid. Therapeutic levels are also attained in bone, synovial fluid, skin, muscles, aqueous humour and pleural fluid. Low concentrations only are reached in the cerebrospinal fluid. Peak serum levels of enrofloxacin are reached within one hour of oral dosing. The presence of food may delay the rate of absorption, however the extent of absorption is not affected. Elimination of enrofloxacin is via a combination of renal and non renal routes. Fifteen to 50% is excreted unchanged in the urine following tubular secretion and glomerular filtration. The remainder undergoes metabolism to various metabolites that are less active than the parent compounds. Thirty to forty percent of the circulation enrofloxacin is metabolised to ciprofloxacin. Metabolites are excreted in urine and faeces..
Indications
Treatment of bacterial infections caused by organisms sensitive to Enrofloxacin in dogs and cats. This includes treatment of infections of the skin including deep pyodermas caused by Staph. intermedius including those infected with secondary invaders., upper and lower respiratory tract including infections with E. coli, Streptococcus sp., Pasteurella sp., Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas sp., Bordetella bronchiseptica and Staphylococcus sp, genitourinary tract including infections with Escherichia coli, Proteus sp., Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus sp. and group D Streptococcus, wounds, abscesses and discharging sinuses..
Contraindications
DO NOT USE in food producing species of animals This product is contraindicated for use in dogs during the rapid growth phase. This means enrofloxacin should not be used in dogs under one year of age, or under 18 months o age for giant breeds. This product is contraindicated for use in cats under 12 week of age. The safety of enrofloxacin in breeding female cats has not been established.
