Hexacon
Chlorhexidine Gluconate 5% w/v
Chlorhexidine is a cationic bis biguanide disinfectant of low order acute oral toxicity and high safety. Because of these properties, it binds strongly to the skin, mucosa and other tissues but is poorly absorbed from the gut or from skin. It is adsorbed from bladder, uterus and ear. It is not virucidal or sporicidal.
Hexacon is an antiseptic and antifungal wash effectively cleans skin and hands against a wide range of bacteria and fungi with low toxicity and with little or no residual resistance. It is bactericidal - causing damage to microbial cell membranes. Chorhexidine solutions have the longest residual activity, remaining chemically active for 5 to 6 hours and is not affected by the presence of blood and organic material.
General antisepsis. Dilute 20 mL in 1 L clean water to produce an 0.1% w/v aqueous solution. Preoperative skin preparation, instrument and surface disinfection. Dilute 10 mL in 15 mL water and make up to 100 mL with industrial methylated spirits to produce an 0.5% w/v in 70% w/v alcohol solution. Note. Use prepared aqueous solution within 1 month; prepared alcohol solution within 12 months. Rinse and dry with care.
Used for removal of bacteria from skin and hands prior to surgery. May be used for wound cleansing, superficial abrasions and infections and for routine cleaning of theatres, surfaces and equipment to avoid cross infection. Hexacon is not affected by the presence of blood and other organic material.
Do not use in body cavities, eyes and ears. Do not mix with soap or other chemicals. Deafness can result from its use in the auditory canal. Do not use if there is a known hypersensitivity. Hexacon is inactivated by hard water and non-ionic surfactants.
