PVP-IODINE SOLUTION 10%
Composition
Polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine 10% w/v (= available iodine 1%) in aqueous solution.
Action
Antiseptic.
Indications
Pre-operative skin sterilisation, oral surgery, burns, wound and ulcer dressing. PVP iodine solution is non-irritant, non toxic and non-staining. This solution gives around 1% available iodine in an aqueous solution. It is broad spectrum antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal. The iodine acts by diffusing into the bacterial cell and killing it. Iodine is virucidal and antifungal, also bacterial spores are killed in 15 minutes. These are advantages over chlorhexidine as spores are unaffected by chlorhexidine. Iodine is also suitable for infections with Candida sp. A dilute solution of 10:1 with water is good for wound irrigation and also for ear infections as long as the ear drum is not ruptured. A concentration of 1:25 will kill Brucella abortus. In preoperative scrubs the bacterial population is substantially reduced for 6-8 hours.
