Amoxycillin is a semisynthetic penicillin highly active against a wide range of gram positive and gram negative bacteria, including the following: Actinobacillus sp, Actinomyces bovis, Bacillus anthracis, Bordetella sp, Clostridium sp, Corynebacterium sp, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Escherichia coli, Fusiformis sp, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Haemophilus sp, Moraxella sp, Pateurella sp, Proteus miribilis, Salmonella sp, Streptococci and some Staphylococci.
Treatment of infections caused by amoxycillin sensitive bacteria in dogs and cats. The major indications include: Local: Dermatitis, abscesses, infected wounds, ear infections. General: Septicaemia, postparturient infection. Alimentary tract: gastroenteritis. Respiratory tract: tonsillitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia. Urogenital tract: cystitis, nephritis, metritis. The high level of antibiotic concentration in the kidneys and urine makes amoxycillin effective in urinary tract infections. Postsurgical use: prophylactic use postoperatively. Amoxycillin is bactericidal due to its action inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell wall mucopeptide. It is resistant to an acid stomach and has good gut absorption unaffected by food affected by milk.
Do not use on small herbivores such as rabbits and guinea pigs, or animals with a history of allergic reactions to penicillin.
Give orally 4 to 11 mg/Kg bodyweight daily until 48 hours after clinical signs have subsided.
