CEPHALEXIN TABLETS
Composition
Cephalexin 200mg as Monohydrate
Cephalexin 600mg as Monohydrate
Description
CEPHALEXIN like other beta-lactam antibiotics, is a bactericidal agent that causes death of bacterial cells through a diversity of biological and biochemical effects on the cell wall. CEPHALEXIN is effective against most gram-positive aerobic cocci and several gram-negative bacteria including, E. coli; Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella. Cephalosporinase producing organisms are not susceptible. CEPHALEXIN is acid stable and thus active when administered orally. It is usually well absorbed. The drug is widely distributed through most body fluids and tissues, including kidneys, lungs, joints, bone, soft tissues and biliary tract. CEPHALEXIN is removed from the blood stream mainly by glomerular filtration through the kidneys together with some tubular secretion. In normal animals the elimination half-life of cephalexin is about 84 minutes. A single oral dose at 15mg/kg in dogs and cats produces serum concentrations of about 8ug/mL for 24 hours.
Indications
For the treatment of infections caused by Cephalexin sensitive organisms. In the treatment of infections of both the upper and lower urinary tract caused by susceptible staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella. In the treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections and arthritis caused by susceptible micro-organisms in dogs and cats.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea may occasionally occur, allergic reactions may be observed, but the incidence is much less than that seen with penicillins. Avoid use in patients with a history of acute allergy to penicillin.
Interactions
Cephalosporins combined with an aminoglycoside antibiotic or potent loop diuretic (eg-furosemide), may increase the probability of nephrotoxicosis from that which one would experience with either drug being used alone.
Dosage
Cephalexin is a 1st generation cephalosporin and is intended for oral administration in dogs and cats. Cephalexin is acid stable and this is used orally and is well absorbed. Cephalexin tablets should be administered at the rate of 15mg/kg bodyweight three times per day. A single only dose at 15mg/kg in dogs and cats produces serum concentrations of 8ug/mL for 24 hours. The elimination half life is about 84 minutes. Genitourinary tract infections should be treated for a minimum of 7 days. In all cases drug treatment should continue for at least 48 hours after animal is normal.
Dose: 15mg/kg Bodyweight three times per day.
Cephalexin 200mg - 1 tablet per 12kg bodyweight three times per day.
